C'est un Kanye West des premiers albums et un Jay-z des années 90 que nous retrouvons sur The joy, chanson produite par le légendaire Pete Rock. 

Kanye West a récemment confirmé que Jay-z et lui allaient ensemble faire un album complet qui se nommera Watch the throne.  The Joy pourrait possiblement en faire partie.

ÉNORME PREMIER ALBUM POUR LOCAL NATIVES !

Local Natives c'est un groupe originaire de L.A et le 16 février dernier, ils sortaient leur premier album ; «Gorilla Manor».   Malgré qu'ils ont dû s'auto-financé pour enregistrer l'album, ils ont quand même su attirer l'attention médiatique ainsi qu'une très bonne critique générale.

Une partie de la chanson circulait déjà depuis un bon moment sur internet, ce qui devait être une chanson référence est en fait une collaboration entre Drake et Jamie Foxx.  Bien que ce ne soit encore que la version radio non-officielle, je dois dire que le résultat est impeccable. 

LUPE FIASCO & COMMON & JENNIFER HUDSON - WE CAN DO IT NOW (PROD. NO ID)

Lupe fiasco, Common, Jennifer Hudson et No ID, tous de Chicago, se sont rassemblés afin de créer We can do it now, qui est inspiré de la saison 3 de Gatorade REPLAY.

NOUVEAU SINGLE POUR CEE-LO - BRIGHT LIGHTS BIGGER CITY

Depuis la sortie de Fuck you, le premier single de The lady killer, Cee-lo ne cesse d'impressionner en sortant tour à tour des chansons d'un très haut niveau et il ne fait pas exception sur Bright Lights Bigger City.

RUNAWAY MOVIE DE KANYE WEST

Pour ceux qui auraient manqués la première mondiale de ``Runaway`` hier soir, vous pouvez écouter la version intégrale sur http://www.kanyeuniversecity.com/ .

Le film, qui accompagnera l'album, d'une durée de 35 minutes, présente Kanye West qui fait la rencontre d'un phoenix (Selita Ebanks).  Il lui fera visiter son monde et passera la soirée avec elle avant qu'elle quitte la terre.  Kanye West compare son esprit artistique au phoenix.  Sa différence l'oblige à prouver à tout le monde qu'il a le droit d'exister.  Kanye West et le phoenix se retrouveront dans un souper auquel seulement des noirs aristocrates sont invités.  La personne à côté de Kanye West lui demandera «you know she's a bird ?», ce à quoi il répondra «nah, I never noticed that»

De plus, en trame sonore, nous pouvons entendre une bonne partie des chansons qui se retrouveront sur l'album, prévu pour le 22 novembre prochain. 

 

DU BEAU POP-FOLK POUR LE PREMIER ALBUM SOLO DE JIMMY HUNT

Membre du groupe Chocolat, Jimmy Hunt sortait un premier album solo mardi dernier (19 octobre).   L'album mélange la pop, du folk et du country et une touche de chansons française. Le drôle d'amalgame que ça donne finit par nous arracher un sourire à chaque chanson.  Jimmy Hunt, c'est un artiste un peu champ gauche, un peu bizarre, quelque peu arrogant, sentimental, et posé.   On aime pour les mélodies accrocheuses, les arrangements soignées ou pour les textes biens fiscellés. Fortement conseillé.

RIHANNA & DRAKE - WHAT'S MY NAME

Après sa séparation avec Chris Brown, des rumeurs voulaient que Rihanna fréquente Drake.  Ils avaient été vus ensemble dans un club et Drake en fait la mention dans la chanson Fireworks.

Une collaboration entre les deux jeunes artistes n'était plus qu'une question de temps.  Cependant, avec tout le commérage que leur ``relation`` a engendrée, je m'aurais attendu à plus pour celle-là.  Mais ça reste une bonne chanson et Drake a de bonnes lignes comme à son habitude.

CHANSON DE LA JOURNÉE : BURIAL - ARCHANGEL

Quelqu'un m'avait déjà dit que Burial avait des airs de 808 & Heartbreak de Kanye West.  Fan de cet album-là que je suis, j'ai sauté sur ce groupe obscure.  Mais ce n'est que des mois plus tard que j'ai vraiment pris le temps d'écouter leur deuxième album (Untrue) en long et en large.  Pour ce qui est de la référence à Kanye West, ce n'est pas totalement faux, même si tirée un peu par les cheveux, à mon avis. Bad news ? Peut-être.  Quoi qu'il en soit, j'aurai l'occasion de faire une critique de l'album, que je viens d'ailleurs de me procurer, mais une chanson m'a faite réagir vivement.  Il s'agit de ``Archangel``. 

KANYE WEST S'ASSOCIE À UN GROUPE KORÉEN POUR LA CHANSON ``AVVY GIRL``

Sur un beat qui rapelle ``Flashing lights``, en plus du premier verse, Kanye West a produit une super collaboration avec le groupe Koréen JYJ. 

VIDÉO DE ``ERASE ME`` DE KID CUDI & KANYE WEST

La chanson ``Erase me`` sert de premier single pour ``Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager``, album prévu pour le 9 novembre.  Le vidéo est en quelque sorte une satire de la vie des rock stars.  Notez la présence de Christopher Mint-Plasse (McLovin) dans le clip. 

LA ROUX - IN FOR THE KILL (REMIX FEAT KANYE WEST)

Après avoir écrit sur Twitter qu'il aimait bien la chanteuse anglaise, Kanye West avait aussi confirmé qu'elle serait présente sur son nouvel album. 

En attendant, Kanye West a mis sa touche sur le remix de ``In for the kill``.  Il semblerait qu'un vidéo soit également en cours de construction.

EMINEM À 60 MINUTES CE SOIR

Eminem a vendu 741 000 copies de ``Recovery`` pour la première semaine seulement.  Plus de deux millions à ce jour.  Après un sixième album plutôt décevant, il a réussi un véritable tour de force avec son nouvel album. 

Il sera ce soir (19h00) à 60 minutes au réseau CBS pour donner une entrevue à Anderson Cooper.  Dans un extrait de l'entrevue, Eminem explique son talent à transformer la prononciation des mots pour les faires rimer.

PREMIER SINGLE DU NOUVEL ALBUM DE GRAND CORPS MALADE

Même si le Slam n'est pas accessible à tous, la figure de proue de ce style musical reste sans l'ombre d'un doute Grand corps malade. 

Après deux très bons albums derrière la cravate, le voilà qu'il revient avec ``3eme temps`` le 18 octobre.  Un premier extrait de l'album est déjà disponible  et il s'intitule ``Roméo kiffe Juliette``.   Il faut croire que Fabien Marsaud (Grand corps malade) avait de grandes aspirations, lui, qui avant son accident, était professeur d'éducation physique.   Non seulement il fait partit des pionners d'un tout nouveau style de musique mais sa réussite est telle que pour son troisième album il se permettra même de se joindre au grand Charles Aznavour pour la chanson ``Tu es, donc j'apprends``.   Ce dernier s'est dit très impressionné par la qualité d'écriture de Grand corps malade.

RÉSUMÉ DE LA PREMIÈRE DU FILM ``RUNAWAY`` DE KANYE WEST

Comme vous le savez surement, en lien avec son nouvel album, Kanye West a tourné un film d'une quarantaine de minutes avec lui-même comme acteur principale.  Le film sert de parallèle avec l'album ``My beautiful dark twisted fantasy`` ainsi qu'avec la vision artistique de Kanye West.

Kanye West – Runaway (Screening Review)


*It started writing this at 2am so if my grammar or my spelling is bad, I apologise up top.*

A few hours ago at BAFTA in London, Kanye West held a screening for 40-minute piece, “Runaway”.

After members of the industry got into their seats, Mr. West was in the building!

He took to the stage and introduced the film that he directed. The movie was written by Hype Williams.

Kanye said that London was like a second home to him “since Dame brought me out here eight years ago”. The artist went on to explain the reason for making this movie.

Since Late Registration, he’s always wanted to have what he called a visual reference. Something people can look back to and with the passing of the great Michael Jackson, Kanye feels “convicted” to present art in the proper way. An extra responsibility to create and make people more inspired.

“Bring real culture to popular culture”.

The rapper went on to expand on the above quote and told a captive audience about the art world vs. the commercial world. Creativity is championed in the art world less than the commercial world. Kanye wants to merge that art world culture into the mainstream.

This is apparent in the movie.

The Movie

Firstly it has French subtitles.

One of the first images you see is of a determined and running Kanye West. The first voice you hear is of Nicki Minaj who narrates the opening in a British accent.

Kanye driving his fancy sports car is hit when a fireball/comet from the sky hits the ground. From this fireball, we see Selita Ebanks as The Phoenix. This phoenix is innocent and for me, it represents the art world. Kanye (being the commercial and art world) takes it into his care and teaches it. There’s a moment where the phoenix is watching TV and not knowing what it is.

Yeezy’s first line, “first rule baby, don’t pay attention to what you see in the news”. It’s almost like he symbolises the merger between the art world and the commercial world.

One thing that really hit me was the distinct colours that are used. Green, Black, White and Red are permanent fixtures in the movie. It really added depth to the cinematography. Ang Lee (director of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), is also a director who uses colour effective to bring out a scene.

There’s an ode to Michael Jackson in the movie with a procession.

The focal point of the movie is the dinner scene. A white table, everyone dressed in white and Kanye arrives with the Phoenix. Someone at the table says “do you know she’s a bird?” and Kanye replies that he’s never noticed that. My interpretation of that moment is that isn’t discriminating. He treated the phoenix like anyone else and artist shouldn’t be discriminated against, it should be championed.

Runaway is performed at this point. Kanye playing on a white paino. Ballet dancers dressed in black dance to the music. The ballet dancing is extensive. But the mood changes after a piece of food is brought to the table with similar feathers to that of the phoenix. This in turn scares the bird who is now convinced that in order to return to her world, she must be burnt. After a night of passion with Kanye, she leaves him and he wakes up to find she’s gone.

One word to describe the movie: Epic.

It’s abstract and I think fans will enjoy it. Some may not be able to sit through the ballet part of the movie but it doesn’t take away from the artistic effort that’s been put into this film. I enjoyed the movie. It will come with the album and will loop from beginning to end. It will be a visual reference point for fans. He’s as passionate as I saw him during his album playback for 808′s & Heartbreak. It’s almost inspiring to see someone still have that much drive.

After the screening, Kanye held a Q&A and then an extended one. Here are some of the moments I captured.

Q&A


Yeezy wants to perform outside the pyramids but they aren’t available until April.

He told the audience that he moved to Japan for three weeks before going to Hawaii and working on the album. He said it was a treat to have Q-Tip, Rick Ross, RZA and Pete Rock come down.

For some reason Kanye West seems more relaxed now. He has been through alot. I think spiritually he’s in a better place. At times he was passionate (as he always is) but also very funny and witty. He was talking about how he understands the position and platform he has now and he wants to make it count. “I have 80-90 years to do something”.

He kept dropping gems and quotables throughout the night. The following was an example, “Hip Hop is like black semen” – lol. I wasn’t quite sure what made him say that.

What I was sure about what Kanye’s intent to showcase art in its purest form. He’s tired of being discriminated against. He doesn’t want to look down at anyone and detests art that does look down on others.

As it was approaching midnight, some people had to go and the rapper wanted to continue so after a brief intermission, the Q&A continued.


Extended Q&A

I took some briefs notes so here they are:

He also spoke on how he came up with “toast to the douche bags”. He was in a party in Stockholm and there were two floors of people partying. One had douche bags and the other snobs.

One deep line Kanye said: “you change things by doing things as good as you can”.

G.O.O.D. Fridays is an exercise in the power of art.

He talked about being 14 years old sitting outside No I.D.’s house trying to get a drum sample and No I.D. would give him a sample every 3 weeks.

To Yeezy, Power is his first commercial single. He said “Love Lockdown”, Jesus Walks and Cant Tell Me Nothing were all singles that went against the norm of what was out at the time. But there’s a reason why he made Power his first commercial single. He wanted to give fans what they wanted this time. After what has happened in the past year, he said it was about getting back “into the graces of the world”. “This album is giving people what they want”.

This was followed by another deep line – “I’ve been making couches for the music industry, can I know sit in one”. He also said that he doesn’t like watching the Power video because of the CGI used on the wings of the phoenix.

Christian Dior Flow was created off the back of “So Appalled”. Kid Cudi, John Legend, Ryan Leslie were all in the studio. Cudi came up with the guitar riff, played it. “We were rockstars motherfuckers”, Kanye said enthusiastically recalling the moment in the studio.

DJ Semtex asked Kanye what took him so long to sign Mos Def. I got the feeling Kanye tried to side-step the question but revealed that Mos Def is 5 tracks into his project.

Rick Ross is an artist Kanye listens to more than his own.

My Q&A with Mr. West.

My first question to Kanye related to the use of colour in the movie and what was his inspiration behind it. There wasn’t one main inspiration behind it but he said if he was 5 years old, that’s how he’d draw and colour it in. It wasn’t about being sophisticated but just being organic.

In the extended Q&A, I then got another question in, this time about working with Pete Rock,

“Pete Rock man, yeah that was an amazing experience. Just to be next to Pete Rock and the presence and to think about how Reminse (T.R.O.Y.) hit me … To hear Jay’s (Jay-Z) voice on a Pete Rock beat with a Reasonable Doubt flow and the shit we are talking about is really really crazy”

NOUVEAU : LLOYD BANKS & KANYE WEST & SWIZZ BEATZ & RYAN LESLIE & FABOLOUS - START IT UP

Il faut se le dire, si Kanye West n'avait pas Twitté que Lloyd Banks faisait partit de ses 5 MC préférés, il serait tombé dans l'oubli.  Vous allez me dire ; ``Benz, beamer or bentlez``, pas mal.  Mais Kanye West a une telle influence que ``The hunger for more 2`` est maintenant considéré comme un des albums les plus attendus de l'année. 

La semaine dernière, Lloyd Banks apparaissait sur ``Christian Dior denim flow`` et aujourd'hui Kanye West (ainsi que d'autres) s'offrait une apparition sur la chanson ``Start it up``, qui sera sur l'album de Lloyd Banks.

À noter, l'excellent beat a été produit par Cardiak.

NOUVEAU : ÉCOUTEZ LA COLLABORATION ENTRE N.E.R.D ET DAFT PUNK : HYPNOTIZE U

Que des fois Pharrell Williams laisse Pharrell Williams de côté, ça fait un grand bien à N.E.R.D, un élan de fraîcheur. 

Pharrell est un producteur hors pair faisant partit des grandes ligues, ses beats ont toujours de la gueule et une signature.  Mais ont peut fouiller son inventaire au plus loin, ça se ressemble souvent. Il maîtrise bien sa formule et est confortable dans ses réalisations typiques. 

Moi, je trouve qu'il devrait sortir de sa zone de confort, où comme ici, laisser d'autres producteurs de talent faire sa job. 

La chanson ``Hypnotize U``, qui se retrouvera sur le nouvel album de N.E.R.D, a été produite par nul autre que les membres de Daft Punk eux-mêmes.  Le résultat ressemble à une moitié du chemin entre le N.E.R.D qu'on est habitué et la touche un peu psychédélique dansante de Daft Punk. 

NOUVEAU : PREMIER SINGLE DE DRAKE SUR SON MIXTAPE R&B : I GET LONELY TOO

Drake vient tout juste de sortir son premier single pour son mixtape R&B prévu pour le temps de noël.

Le mixtape s'intitule ``It's never enough``.

NOUVEAU : PREMIER SINGLE DU NOUVEL ALBUM DE AKON : ANGEL

Le quatrième album d'Akon le 29 novembre 2010 et un premier single est maintenant disponible.  La chanson se nomme ``Angel``.   Encore une fois, Akon prouve qu'il est passé maître dans l'art de faire des succès pop/commerciale avec une nouvelle chanson qui devrait se hisser au sommet des palamrès.  

Des fuites avaient permis plus tôt cette année à ; ``Nosy neighbour`` et ``Party animal``, deux chansons de l'album, de se retrouver sur internet.  Tous deux produites par David Guetta. 

Même si des sources affirment que le nouvel album de Akon se nomme ``Akonic``, aucun titre officiel n'a encore été dévoilé.

CHANSON DE LA JOURNÉE : THE ROOTS & JOANNA NEWSOM - RIGHT ON

Voici une des nombreuses excellentes chansons qui se retrouvent sur le plus récent de The Roots ``How I got over``.  Sur le refrain, on entend la mélodieuse voix Joanna Newsom.

NOUVEAU : VOUS POUVEZ ÉCOUTER LE NOUVEL ALBUM DE KINGS OF LEON...MAINTENANT !

Comme c'est souvent le cas, 2 semaines avant sa sortie officielle, ``Come around sundown`` est déjà disponible un peu partout sur internet.  J'ai pas encore pris le temps d'écouter l'album en long et en large puisque je viens d'apprendre la nouvelle.  En plus de ``Radioactive``, j'ai écouté ``Pickup truck`` et ``The end`` et une chose est sûre, l'album promet.  Je ne ferai pas d'analyse hâtive, mais les deux nouvelles chansons me rapellent le Kings of leon que j'aime entendre.  Petite hypothèse : Ce sera un excellent album de road trip.

L'album sort en magasin le 18 octobre prochain.

NOUVEAU : PERFORMANCE DE KANYE WEST A SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE

Après une longue disparition, Kanye West a émergé avec la chanson ``Power`` dans laquelle il chantait ; ``F-ck SNL and the whole cast, tell ‘em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass, more specifically, they can kiss my asshole``.  C'était donc étonnant qu'après ces paroles sulfureuses, le voir retourner à l'émission pour y performer ``Power`` et ``Runaway``.  Fait intéressant, la partie où il s'en prend à Saturday Night live a été remplacé par un nouveau verse inédit. 

Pour ce qui est de la prestation, le décor avait les mêmes allures que pour sa performance aux VMAS.  Un décor d'un blanc épuré, sa MPC 2000 et lui dans un habit rouge vif.  Et, autour de lui, le nombre de ballerines s'est multiplié, réussissant une chorégraphie impeccable.

Kanye West sera ce soir à Saturday Night Live pour performer ``Runaway``.

Après la bombe du premier single (I need a dollar), Aloe Blacc a dévoilé le vidéo qui accompagne la chanson ``Femme Fatale``.  Tourné en noir et blanc, le visuel comme l'ambiance de la chanson, est sombre et soulful.  Aloe Blacc possède une très belle voix, rapellant par moments un certain Marvin Gaye.
